The Denied Aspects Of Self

by Shen Gerald

This is an article about the light and dark aspects of our self and how can we discover them.

We, as human beings, tend to unknowingly create mental self-images about ourselves. Examples of these self-images are 'I am kind', 'I am smart' and so on so forth. We like to think of ourselves positively. More often than not we tend to totally believed that the image is the 'complete self'. However, when on a spiritual path, one begins to be confronted by his or her hitherto unknown 'dark aspects'. At first, we may deny that we could have these unpleasant tendencies. In time, we begin to accept that underneath the 'light side', there are denied sides that we do not like to admit. These so-called bad sides were as quickly brushed aside as they pop out into the mind. Now, they did not really go away but went undercover into the subconscious.

So, I think the problem perhaps is that we as humans tend to create a self-image of ourself far too early. This self-image is like a template front-end mask that the person believe he/she must be. So any disagreeable thoughts, that pop into one's mind were shove under the rug, even away from the conscious mind.

"The psychological rule says that when an inner situation is not made conscious, it happens outside as fate. That is to say, when the individual remains undivided and does not become conscious of his inner opposite, the world must perforce act out the conflict and be torn into opposing halves." Dr Carl Jung

If the above-mentioned law works, then any subconscious aspect will seek to be make known. Thus we experience the subconscious aspect as external of us. This aspects gets projected as external experiences. This may be what constitutes karma, which is the Eastern philosophy of cause and effect.

One method of discovering these denied aspects of ourselves is through dream interpretation. More often that not, these aspects appear as characters in our dream. Somehow, dreams tend to express these tendencies of ours in symbolic manners such as dream characters. Thus, in my opinion, dream interpretation is a skill that is worth learning.

Well, that is all for now. Hope you find this article insightful.

Thank you for reading.
