Big Dreams And Goal Achievement

by Jackie Headland

A question I'm frequently asked when I speak to groups about the art of achieving success is: "I do all the work to plan my goals, but my motivation blows hot and cold. How can I stay focused and keep my motivation hot?"

It's true that having a plan is important if you are to achieve your goals. However, the real problem is that most people do not take time to identify what they truly desire nor do they pay attention to building passion for what they want. Believe me once you connect with your 'passion' nothing will stop you.

When goals lack desire and passion they are dead in the water. Do not commit to a goal unless you truly desire it and have a 'passion' to achieve it. You will never maintain your focus or your energy without these two drivers. They will energise you through the good times when your actions are leading to the success you desire and more importantly they will sustain your energy and drive when the going gets tough and all kinds of barriers are put in your path.

Let me give you some examples:

Lance Armstrong who was diagnosed with testicular cancer when he was 23 years old and yet has gone on to win the Tour De France 7 times since - the ony man in the history of the TDF to do so. Or Erik Weihenmayer who became the first blind climber to summit the traditional Seven Summits when he reached the top of Mt. Kosciusko, highest peak in Australia, on September 5 2002.

How much desire and passion did they have for their goals? A great deal. Plus they included two simple, "secrets" that you can easily duplicate.

They chose BIG dreams that filled him with passion and they wrote them down.

There's no power at all in small dreams. Small dreams keep you small. When the dream isn't big enough, it's too easy to give in to the obstacles that appear in our life. It's very difficult to maintain the persistence that all great achievement requires when the dream is small or ordinary.

Once you've identified your dream goal, list at least 20 reasons why you want to achieve it. Your why's build your passion. The more why's you list, the more passion you'll fuel, and the easier you will find it to remain focused and enthusiastic for the long haul to goal achievement - no matter the circumstances.

One of the biggest dreamers in the world is Mark Victor Hansen. Working with his partner, Jack Canfield, their idea was rejected by 140 book publishers as "unsellable." Today, their Chicken Soup series includes more than 70 titles that have sold more than 90 million copies in 39 languages. Mark says, "The more goals you set - the more goals you get. Think big, act big and set out to accomplish big results. "

Not only must your dreaming and goal setting be big, but it must be in writing. There's a magic that happens when you write your goals down. Your unconscious mind pays serious attention to them and conspires with the universe to help you achieve them. Experts like Brian Tracy reckon that you increase the odds of achieving your goals tenfold when you write them down.

Who knows where your life can go after it is driven by life goals you feel passionate about. Whatever you dreams may be, when you're doing your goal setting, make them BIG and WRITE THEM DOWN!
